Morris

Introduced in August 1962, the Morris 1100 was the first version of BMC’s highly successful ADO16 family and quickly became one of Britain’s most popular cars. Designed under the direction of Alec Issigonis and styled by Pininfarina, it combined front-wheel drive, a transverse engine and innovative Hydrolastic suspension to deliver exceptional interior space, comfort and road holding for a car of its size. Initially offered as a four-door saloon, the range was later expanded with a Traveller estate version and, from 1967, a two-door model. Power came from the proven A-Series engine, first in 1.1-litre form and later as the more powerful 1.3-litre. The Morris version was positioned as a practical and affordable family car, while sharing its basic design with Austin, MG, Riley, Wolseley and Vanden Plas counterparts. Remaining in production until 1971, when it was replaced by the Morris Marina, the Morris 1100/1300 played a major role in making the ADO16 Britain’s best-selling car throughout much of the 1960s.
