Olympia Rekord, Rekord
1953-1986
In March 1953, the pre-war Opel Olympia was replaced by the Opel Olympia Rekord. Innovations included a modern ponton body, incorporating styling features from the United States that had annual facelifts as well as exterior and interior trim changes. The 1,488 cc four-cylinder, water-cooled engine however, had changed little since it was introduced in the 1937 Opel Olympia. Starting in August 1953, Opel offered a two-door convertible, which found few customers and was discontinued in July 1956. Also available in August 1953 was a three-door stationwagon, which Opel branded as the CarAVan. The car initially featured an open-mouthed front grill which reminded commentators of a shark's mouth. The Opel Olympia Rekord was superseded in August 1957 by the new, larger, and more highly styled Rekord P1, which was available in a four-door body style for the first time.

In augustus 1957 kwam de tweede generatie Rekord op de markt, de P1. De wagen was iets groter dan de voorganger en had een opvallende panoramische voor- en achterruit. Aanvankelijk was de Rekord alleen leverbaar als tweedeurs sedan, in 1958 werd het programma uitgebreid met een vierdeurs sedan en driedeurs stationwagen.

In the summer of 1960, the Rekord P2 was introduced as the successor to the Rekord P1. It kept the same wheelbase but was slightly longer and wider. A major change was the introduction of a factory-built coupé. The earlier P1 coupé had been a costly conversion by an outside coachbuilder, but Opel’s in-house production made the P2 coupé far more affordable and successful. Still, the best-seller remained the saloon, offered with two or four doors. Despite its success, it was replaced in early 1963 after just 30 months by the Rekord A. Stylistically, the P2 was cleaner and less “American-looking” than its predecessor, with a wider grille and minimal tail fins. The removal of the panoramic screen allowed for wider front doors and easier access. The P2 came in an unusually wide range of body styles for its time: two- or four-door saloons, a three-door estate, and a panel van version. Convertible versions, built only by Autenrieth, were extremely rare and expensive - just twenty were made, with only eight known to survive today.

In maart 1963 kwam de opvolger van de P2 op de markt, de Rekord A. De auto zag er zeer modern uit, maar de motor was nog vrijwel hetzelfde als die uit 1937. Ondanks dat de naam Olympia officieel was losgelaten stond er nog wel Olympia in chromen letters op het dashboardkastje.

Halverwege de jaren zestig was de Rekord technisch inmiddels sterk verouderd, dus er moesten hoog nodig nieuwe motoren geïntroduceerd worden. Terwijl de introductiedatum voor de nieuwe Rekord-lijn dichterbij kwam en de motoren klaar waren, was het nieuwe model verder nog lang niet klaar. In augustus 1965 kwam de Rekord B dan ook als een tussenmodel op de markt. Het was feitelijk een Rekord A met gewijzigde voor- en achterkant en dus de nieuwe motoren.
In augustus 1966 kwam dan eindelijk de vernieuwde Rekord C op de markt. De carrosserie was gegroeid en had een moderne coke-bottle stijl. In vier jaar tijd zijn er bijna 1,3 miljoen exemplaren van gebouwd. Naast de sedan, was er een stationwagen en een coupé leverbaar.

Begin 1972 kwam de Rekord D op de markt. Technisch was er niet veel verschil met de Rekord C, maar de carrosserie was geheel vernieuwd met bijvoorbeeld een veel groter glasoppervlak. Met meer dan een miljoen verkochte exemplaren was het een succesvol model. In augustus 1977 werd de Rekord D vervangen door de E.

Strikt genomen was Ranger een apart merk binnen de General Motors groep met slechts drie belangrijke afzetmarkten: Zuid-Afrika, België en Zwitserland. De Belgische Rangers werden tussen 1970 en 1978 in Antwerpen gebouwd en waren feitelijk licht gemodificeerde Rekords. Het bestaansrecht van het merk werd steeds meer in twijfel getrokken en de komst van de Rekord E betekende dan ook het einde van Ranger.
