Volkswagen

Polo

1975-present

In August 1974, Volkswagen unveiled the Polo, which was essentially a rebadged version of the Audi 50. It officially went on sale in March 1975. The differences between the two models were minimal - the Polo was more affordable and stripped-down compared to the slightly more upscale Audi. Both cars were initially sold side by side, but the Audi 50 never matched the Polo’s sales success and was discontinued in 1978. The Polo was offered as a hatchback, while a saloon version, introduced in 1977, was marketed separately as the Volkswagen Derby. In 1979, the Polo received a facelift featuring plastic bumpers, a new front grille, and an updated dashboard. This revised version made its debut in February 1979 at the Amsterdam Motor Show.
