Cavalier

1975-1995

The Vauxhall Cavalier was launched in November 1975 as a badge-engineered version of the Opel Ascona B, which had debuted just three months earlier. Uniquely, the Cavalier combined the Ascona’s body with the front end of the Opel Manta, giving it a sportier appearance. It marked General Motors' effort to create a more unified European model strategy under both the Opel and Vauxhall brands. The Cavalier closely followed the development cycles of its Opel counterparts and would go on to be produced in three generations. Initially, it was sold in eleven European markets, including the Netherlands. However, in December 1979, GM ended the export of Vauxhall-branded models to focus entirely on Opel for continental Europe. From that point forward, the Vauxhall Cavalier was offered exclusively in the UK, where it became one of the brand’s most recognisable and successful models well into the 1990s.
