Suzuki
Fronte
1962-1989
The Suzuki Fronte was introduced in March 1962 as a passenger-car version of the Suzulight Van. Initially featuring front-wheel drive and a 360 cc two-stroke twin-cylinder engine, it combined compact dimensions with economical motoring. A completely redesigned Fronte 360 appeared in 1967, adopting a rounded body, rear-mounted three-cylinder engine and rear-wheel drive. Its distinctive styling and lively performance made it a popular competitor in Japan’s kei-car market. Sportier SS and SSS versions further strengthened its appeal, while the larger-engined Fronte 500 was developed for export markets. The range expanded in 1969 with the more practical Fronte Van and Estate, featuring a conventional front-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout. Further refinements followed in 1970, shortly before the original rounded Fronte was replaced by the more angular Stingray generation.
