Simca

The Simca 1000 was introduced in October 1961 as Simca's first rear-engined, four-door saloon. Developed in close cooperation with Fiat but powered by Simca's own 944 cc Poissy engine, it combined compact dimensions with a surprisingly spacious interior. Its modern design, independent suspension and lively handling made it an instant success in France and many export markets. Over the following years the range expanded with the simpler Simca 900, the budget Sim'4 and increasingly powerful 1.0- and 1.1-litre versions. A semi-automatic transmission was also offered on selected models. By the late 1960s the Simca 1000 had become one of France's best-selling small cars, with annual production regularly exceeding 100,000 units.

For the 1969 model year, the Simca 1000 received its first facelift, introducing larger headlights, redesigned bumpers, new wheel covers and distinctive rectangular rear lights. During this period the range continued to expand with more powerful engines, including the 1.1- and 1.3-litre units, while the sporty Rallye models established the Simca 1000 as a popular competition and enthusiast's car.

The final update arrived for the 1977 model year. The most noticeable change was the adoption of rectangular headlights, giving the car a more modern appearance. Minor trim updates accompanied the facelift, but mechanically the model remained largely unchanged. Production ended in 1978 after a remarkable 17-year career and almost two million cars built.
