Riley

Elf

1961-1969

Introduced in 1961, the Riley Elf was conceived as a more luxurious and sophisticated version of the Mini. While based on the same compact platform, the Elf featured a longer rear section with subtle tailfins and a proper boot, giving it a more traditional three-box saloon appearance. At the front, the car received Riley’s characteristic upright grille, while the interior was upgraded with wood veneer trim, extra chrome detailing and improved equipment. Initially powered by the Mini’s 848 cc engine, the Elf later adopted a more powerful 998 cc unit in the 1963 Mk II update. The Mk III facelift of 1966 introduced wind-up windows, improved ventilation and concealed door hinges, years before these appeared on the standard Mini. Positioned above the similar Wolseley Hornet, the Riley Elf was the more expensive and refined of the two. Production ended in 1969 after 30,912 units.
