Renault
Rambler
1962-1967
Beginning in 1962, all three generations of the American Rambler Classic were assembled from CKD kits by Renault at its factory in Haren, near Brussels, and marketed in several European countries as the “Rambler Renault.” Following the disappearance of the Renault Frégate, Renault lacked a large executive car in its range and selected the Rambler for its relatively compact dimensions and European-friendly styling. The cars were sold through Renault dealers in markets including France, Belgium and the Netherlands. In France, coachbuilder Henri Chapron even created specially modified Rambler sedans as potential presidential limousines for Charles de Gaulle, although the French government ultimately chose Citroën instead. The Classic's successor, the Rambler Rebel, was also built by the Belgium Renault plant for the 1967 year only and was also sold as "Rambler Renault" in France's domestic and export markets.
