Renault
Colorale
1950-1957
Introduced in 1950, the Renault Colorale was an ambitious attempt by Renault to move into the larger family car market. Its name combined the French words coloniale and rurale, reflecting Renault’s intention to create a rugged vehicle equally suited to rural France and overseas territories. Built on a modified Renault commercial vehicle chassis, the Colorale featured a spacious body inspired by American station wagons and was offered in several versions, including the popular Prairie and Savane estate models. With generous passenger accommodation, a large cargo area and even optional four-wheel drive, the Colorale anticipated many of the characteristics later associated with SUVs. However, its size, modest performance and unconventional styling limited its appeal in post-war Europe, where buyers generally preferred more elegant and economical cars. Production ended in 1957 after approximately 43,000 units, making the Colorale an innovative but ultimately unsuccessful chapter in Renault’s history.
