1960-1975
In May 1960 the Pinin Farina styled Peugeot 404 was introduced as the successor to the 403. It was to become a very popular car, with a reputation for durability and value. The 404 was offered initially as a four-door saloon only, fitted with a 1,468 cc four-cylinder engine. At the October 1961 Mondial de l'Automobile in Paris, the cabriolet was presented, the accompanying coupé was launched six months later. They were luxury and expensive cars, the bodyshells being made by the Pinin Farina workshops in Torino and only the floorpan and mechanical elements shared with the saloon. 1962 saw the introduction of the Commerciale, Break and seven-seat Familiale, with a floorpan extended by 145 mm. As of 1964, a 1,948 cc diesel engine was offered and in 1966 an automatic transmission became available. In March 1967, a pick-up version was introduced. Almost 2.9 million units have been built, of which more than a million were built outside of France.
