Opel

Commodore

1967-1982

Building on the successful Rekord C, Opel launched the Commodore A in February 1967 as a more luxurious and powerful six-cylinder alternative. Available as a two- or four-door saloon and a stylish hardtop coupé, it combined refined performance with everyday practicality. Buyers could initially choose between 2.2- and 2.5-litre six-cylinder engines, while the sporty Commodore GS soon followed with 130 hp from twin carburettors. In 1970 Opel introduced the high-performance GS/E, featuring Bosch D-Jetronic electronic fuel injection and 150 hp, making it one of the fastest German family cars of its era with a top speed approaching 200 km/h. A 2.8-litre GS completed the range later that year. By the end of production in 1971, 156,330 Commodore A models had been built, establishing it as Opel's flagship sporting saloon.

Introduced in 1972, the Commodore B was a thoroughly modern successor to the Commodore A, adopting the Rekord D's more angular styling and conventional three-box design. The range continued to offer four-door saloon and two-door coupé body styles, while the proven six-cylinder engines were further refined. The top model remained the fuel-injected GS/E, now powered by a 2.8-litre engine producing 160 hp, making it the fastest Commodore yet. Revised emissions regulations in 1974 saw the 2.5-litre models discontinued and the remaining engines detuned. Production ended in 1977 after nearly 141,000 units, bringing an end to the Commodore's second generation before it was succeeded by the Commodore C.
