NSU

Introduced at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 1965, the NSU Typ 110 was designed to move NSU into the lower middle-class market. Based on the Prinz 1000 but featuring a longer wheelbase and extended front overhang, it offered significantly more passenger and luggage space while retaining compact exterior dimensions. Distinctive rectangular headlights and a more luxurious interior gave the car a more upmarket appearance. Power came from a rear-mounted, air-cooled four-cylinder engine with overhead camshaft, initially displacing 1,085 cc and producing 49 hp. In 1966, the more powerful 110 S and 110 SC versions arrived with a 1,177 cc engine developing 60 hp. Advanced engineering, including independent suspension, front disc brakes and excellent accessibility for maintenance, helped the Typ 110 earn a reputation as one of the most sophisticated small saloons of its era. 

In 1967, NSU simplified its model range by renaming the Typ 110 as the NSU 1200. The car retained its rear-mounted 1,177 cc four-cylinder engine and spacious body, while offering improved equipment and comfort-oriented versions such as the 1200 C. Fast, economical and easy to maintain, the 1200 remained in production until 1972. More than 256,000 units were built, making it one of NSU’s most successful conventional models before the company became part of Volkswagen-Audi.
