MG

The MG T-Type began with the TA Midget in 1936, replacing the PB. It retained traditional MG sports-car styling but introduced a longer, wider chassis and a 1,292 cc overhead-valve engine producing 50 hp. Most were open two-seaters, although Tickford drophead and rare Airline coupé versions were also offered. In 1939, the TB introduced a new 1,250 cc engine, producing 54 hp, together with a dry-plate clutch and revised gearbox. Production was cut short by the Second World War after only 379 examples, making the TB the rarest T-Type. MG resumed production in 1945 with the TC, closely based on the TB but featuring several mechanical refinements and a slightly wider cockpit. Despite being produced exclusively with right-hand drive, the TC became particularly successful in the United States and helped establish the popularity of British sports cars there. A total of 10,001 TCs were produced before production ended in 1949.

Introduced in 1950, the MG TD combined traditional T-Type styling with considerably more modern engineering. It retained the 1,250 cc engine but adopted the MG Y-Type chassis, independent front suspension, rack-and-pinion steering and smaller 15-inch wheels. Left-hand drive became available, reflecting the growing importance of North America. A more powerful TD Mk II Competition Model was also offered. Nearly 30,000 TDs were produced through 1953, with the great majority exported and over 23,000 going to the United States.

Introduced in October 1953, the MG TF was a modernized development of the TD rather than an entirely new model. Its most obvious changes were faired-in headlights and a sloping radiator grille, while the tuned 1,250 cc engine produced 57.5 bhp. In 1954, the TF 1500 introduced a larger 1,466 cc engine with 63 bhp. Production ended in April 1955 after 9,602 TFs had been built, making way for the completely new MGA.
