Mercedes-Benz

230 SL, 250 SL, 280 SL (W113)

1963-1971

The successor to the 300 SL and 190 SL made its debut at the March 1963 Geneva Motor Show. The 230 SL was based on the Heckflosse W111 sedan platform with its chassis shortened by 30 cm. Under the hood was a 2,308 cc inline-six cylinder engine. In 1967 a new, 2,496 cc engine was fitted, giving way to the name 250 SL. Already in December 1967, after just over 5,000 units of the 250 SL had been built, the 280 SL was introduced with a new 2,778 cc engine. Production continued until February 1971, when the W113 was replaced by the entirely new and substantially heavier R107 350 SL.
