Mini

1965-1976

In August 1959 BMC chief Sir Leonard Lord announced that Innocenti would "assemble and partially manufacture BMC cars for the Italian market", including the Austin A40, the Austin A55 and the Morris Oxford. The 850 cc Mini Minor Mk I debuted in September 1965, joined by the 998 cc Cooper the following March and the wood-framed Traveller station wagon in October.

In October 1969 the Mark III was introduced. The Innocenti built Mini’s appeared to be identical to their British counterparts, but they had subtle differences. The Innocenti’s had small vent windows, a feature never offered on the Longbridge cars. The most noticeable difference was in the trunk lid, which had an indentation shaped for the square Italian registration plate and a provision for a downward-shining plate light that the British cars would only get later. Innocenti itself became an exporter of Mini's in early 1973, offering the Cooper 1300 Export, the 1000 Export and the 1001 Export on the European market.
