Glas

Isar

1958-1965

The Glas Isar was a small four-seater produced by Hans Glas GmbH in Dingolfing between 1958 and 1965. It was first presented as the Goggomobil T600 at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September 1957, with series production beginning in 1958. Initially described as a “big Goggomobil,” the car was rebranded Glas Isar in November 1959 to distance it from the company’s microcars and to give the model a more distinctive identity. The name referred to the Isar river flowing through Bavaria near Glas’s headquarters. The compact two-door saloon featured a steel monocoque body, independent front suspension and a rear-mounted two-cylinder boxer engine. Early versions used a 584 cc engine producing 20 hp, while the later 688 cc unit offered 30 hp and a top speed of about 110 km/h. An estate version joined the range in 1959. Despite early reliability problems, the Isar became Glas’s first true small family car and remained in production until 1965.
