Ford

The original Ford Mustang was launched in April 1964 and became an immediate success, effectively creating the new “pony car” class. Based mechanically on the economical Ford Falcon, it combined affordable engineering with distinctive long-bonnet, short-deck styling. Initially offered as a hardtop and convertible, a fastback followed later in 1964. Buyers could choose from six-cylinder and increasingly powerful V8 engines, including the 289 HiPo. The GT package arrived in 1965, while the Shelby GT350 added serious performance credentials. For 1966, styling changes were relatively modest, including a revised grille and side trim. By then, more than a million Mustangs had already been built, firmly establishing Ford’s new model as an American automotive icon.

The Ford Mustang II arrived in September 1973 for the 1974 model year, replacing its increasingly large predecessor with a much smaller, more economical design. Based partly on the Ford Pinto, it was offered as a two-door coupé and three-door hatchback, initially with four-cylinder and V6 engines. A 5.0-litre V8 returned in 1975, while sporty Cobra II and later King Cobra versions strengthened its performance image. Despite later criticism, the Mustang II sold strongly and remained in production through 1978.
