The Ford Maverick was Ford’s compact model in North America from 1970 to 1977, replacing the Falcon and initially positioned as an inexpensive competitor to increasingly popular imports. Based on Falcon-derived rear-wheel-drive underpinnings, it combined simple mechanicals with Mustang-inspired styling featuring a long hood, fastback roofline and short rear deck. Initially offered only as a two-door sedan, a longer-wheelbase four-door joined the range for 1971. Engines ranged from 170 cu in (2,800 cc) and 200 cu in (3,300 cc) straight-sixes to the optional 302 cu in (4,949 cc) V8. Sportier Grabber and more luxurious LDO packages broadened its appeal. The Maverick proved immediately successful, with nearly 579,000 built in its first year. It remained in production alongside the newer Granada before being replaced by the Fairmont for 1978.
