Ford

Introduced in 1970, the Ford Taunus was the German counterpart to the British Cortina Mk3 and formed part of Ford of Europe’s increasingly unified model strategy. With its flowing “Coke-bottle” styling, long bonnet and relatively wide stance, the Taunus reflected American design influence while remaining firmly positioned in the European mid-size segment. It replaced the earlier 12M and 15M P6 series and sat between the Escort and the Granada in Ford’s lineup. Mechanically conventional, the Taunus featured front-mounted four-cylinder engines driving the rear wheels. Engine options ranged from 1.3- and 1.6-litre units to the more powerful 2.0-litre variants. The range included two- and four-door saloons, a fastback-style coupé, and the practical Turnier estate.

In August 1976 the Taunus received a substantial facelift that modernised its appearance. The previously curvaceous body was sharpened with a more angular front end, a revised grille and larger rectangular headlamps on most versions. The rear design was also updated with new tail lamps and a cleaner boot layout. Inside, the dashboard was redesigned and trim quality improved, giving the car a more contemporary feel.
