DAF
55
1968-1972
The DAF 55 was introduced in 1968 as a step up from DAF’s earlier models, aimed at giving the brand a more mature and capable image. Key to this was the use of a 1,108 cc four-cylinder engine sourced from Renault, which offered better performance than the twin-cylinder units used in earlier DAFs. Shortly after launch, DAF added a sporty-looking coupé to the range, reinforcing the car’s more dynamic ambitions. Following the brand’s participation in the London–Sydney Marathon, DAF introduced a dealer-available "Marathon" tuning kit to emphasize the model’s sporting potential. In 1971, the factory-built DAF 55 Marathon was officially added to the lineup, offering improved performance and distinctive styling details.
