Chevy II, Nova, Concours

1962-1979

After the rear-engine Chevrolet Corvair was outsold by the conventional Ford Falcon in 1960, Chevrolet completed work on a more conventional compact car that would become the Chevy II. It was one of the fastest new-car development programs in GM history – just 18 months after the designers got the green light, the first production Chevy II rolled off the assembly line in August 1961, in time for its September 29 introduction. The car was available as a two- and four-door sedan, as well as convertible and station wagon versions. When the Chevy II was introduced, it was the second post-WWII American made car from the "Big 3" to use a four-cylinder engine.

The third generation Chevy II, introduced for the 1968 model year, was fully redesigned and the station wagon and hardtop sport coupé were discontinued. After 1968, the Chevy II nameplate was dropped, with Nova becoming the nameplate for all of the 1969 through 1979 models. The 1973 model year introduced a hatchback body style based on the two-door coupé. The front and rear of the Nova were restyled, with bigger bumpers and a redesigned trunk.

The 1975 Chevrolet Nova was the most-changed Chevy for that model year. The body was completely redesigned and a lot of technical improvements were implemented. For 1976 the Nova LN trim was rebranded Concours to rival the Ford Granada and the Mercury Monarch, as well as upscale versions of the Dodge Dart and Plymouth Valiant. The next year already, the Concours was discontinued to clear the way for the newly downsized Malibu.
