Buick
Special
1936-1969
In 1936, the Buick Special was introduced, being the marque's entry level full-size automobile. It had a 3,818 cc V8 engine which was enlarged to 4,064 cc a year later. The Special underwent a full restyling for 1939, with a more enclosed nose and a wider grille. After a four-year hiatus, production resumed in 1946 with minor changes until the prewar body was finally replaced halfway through the 1949 model year.
In 1961, the car returned after a short absence of two years, but this time it was on the brand new unibody compact GM Y platform. It was powered by an innovative 3,523 cc aluminium-block V8 engine. As of 1962, the 3,245 cc V6 "Fireball" engine was available, making the Special the first American car to use a V6 engine in volume production.
