407

1961-1963

The Bristol 407, produced between 1961 and 1963, marked a major turning point for the British manufacturer as its first model following separation from the Bristol Aeroplane Company. Although it closely resembled the earlier 406, with only subtle styling changes such as a slightly larger grille and twin exhausts, the real transformation lay beneath the surface. The traditional BMW-derived six-cylinder engine was replaced by a powerful 5,130 cc Chrysler V8, significantly improving performance and giving the 407 a top speed of over 200 km/h. The suspension was also modernised with coil springs, better suited to the increased power and weight. Bodywork was produced by Park Royal, with a few bespoke examples by Italian coachbuilders Viotti and Zagato. Around 300 units were built, establishing a V8 tradition that defined Bristol for decades.
