Sunbeam
1250, 1500, 1300, 1600
1970-1978
Introduced in February 1970, the Hillman Avenger was significant as it was the first and last car to be developed by Rootes after the Chrysler takeover in 1967. The car was extensively marketed in continental Europe as the Sunbeam 1250 and 1500, some northern European markets received the car as the Sunbeam Avenger. Stylistically, the Avenger was very much in tune with its time with the American-influenced "Coke Bottle" waistline and semi-fastback rear-end. Unlike any previous Rootes design, there were no badge-engineered Humber or Singer versions in the UK market. Gradually, the Avenger range was expanded. In October 1970, the sportier GT was added, followed by five-door estate versions in March 1972. Two-door saloon models were added in March 1973, with all engine and trim options of the existing four-door range. In October 1973 the engines were enlarged to 1,295 cc and 1,598 cc. From 1976 onward the car was badged as the Chrysler Avenger. After PSA Peugeot Citroën took control over the company in 1979 the car was marketed as the Talbot Avenger until its demise in 1981.
