Jaguar
S-Type, 420
1963-1968
In September 1963 the new S-type was announced. It was a technically more sophisticated development of the Mark 2, offering buyers a more luxurious alternative without the size and expense of the Mark Ten. Compared to the Mark 2, it featured longer rear bodywork, among other styling and interior changes. Sales never really took off, the S-Type did not manage to overtake the Mark 2's production figures until 1965. In 1966 already, the 420 was developed to replace the S-Type but eventually it remained on sale until the arrival of the Jaguar XJ 6 in 1968.

During the London Motor Show in October 1966, the Jaguar 420 and its badge-engineered sister model, the Daimler Sovereign, were presented. Due to the disappointing sales figures of the large Mark Ten, there was a need for a more compact sedan. The 420 was in fact a further development of the S-Type introduced in 1963, the styling of which was not appreciated by everyone. The biggest changes concerned the new front, which showed strong similarities with the Mark Ten. The 420 proved to be an interim model: production ceased in September 1968 with the arrival of the XJ6, while the Daimler Sovereign remained in production for a good six months longer.
