Jaguar

2.4, 3.4, Mark 2, 240, 340

1955-1969

In October 1955, the new Jaguar 2.4 was presented at the Earls Court Motor Show. It was the first Jaguar with unitary construction of body and chassis, featuring independent front suspension. It introduced a modern style and a new level of performance to the middle-weight executive saloon segment. Actual production only started in the summer of 1956. It was an immediate success, easily outselling the larger, much more expensive Jaguar saloons. In February 1957 the Jaguar 3.4 followed. It was specially designed for the American market and was not at first available on the domestic market.

Late 1959 the 2.4 and 3.4 were succeeded by the Mark 2 which could also be fitted with a 3,781 cc engine. The new car was re-engineered above the waistline, with vision dramatically improved by an 18% increase in cabin glass area. Slender front pillars allowed for a wider windscreen and the rear window almost wrapped around to the enlarged side windows. The radiator grille was changed and larger side, tail and fog lamps were repositioned. There was an improved instrument layout that became standard for all Jaguar cars until the XJ series II of 1973.

In September 1967 the 3.8 litre model was discontinued and the 2.4 and 3.4 litre Mark 2 cars were rebadged as the 240 and 340 respectively. They were basically used as gap-fillers until the XJ6 arrived in September 1968. The 340 was discontinued at that time, but remaining Mark 2 parts were used up producing budget-priced 240s until April 1969. These sold at £1,364, only £20 more than the first 2.4 in 1956.
