1966-1974

In August 1966 production of the new Volvo 144 started. It was the successor to the Amazon, although that car remained in production until 1970. It was a boxy, four-door saloon with the 1,778 cc four-cylinder Amazon engine under the hood. The two-door 142 was introduced in June 1967, followed by the five-door 145 in November 1967. For the 1969 model year the engine was enlarged to 1,986 cc.

For the 1971 model year the wheel base was extended by two centimeters. The first of several styling changes were implemented, including a revised black grille which saw the now ubiquitous Volvo diagonal line. The luxurious GL was introduced with leather seats and a high compression version of the B20 engine with fuel injection.
