Saab

The Saab 99 marked a major step forward for the Swedish manufacturer when it was unveiled in November 1967, entering production in 1968 as a larger and more advanced successor to the Saab 96. Developed under the secret "Project Gudmund", it introduced a modern front-wheel-drive platform with a longitudinal four-cylinder engine, outstanding safety features and excellent visibility. Early cars used a Triumph-sourced 1.7-litre engine, later enlarged to 1.85 litres before Saab introduced its own 2.0-litre B-engine in 1972. A four-door version arrived in 1970, while electronic fuel injection debuted the same year on the 99E. Further innovations included headlamp wipers, impact-resistant bumpers, heated seats and the practical three-door Combi Coupé introduced in 1974. The legendary 99 Turbo followed in 1978, becoming one of the world's first successful turbocharged family cars and firmly establishing Saab's reputation for engineering innovation.
