Wartburg

1000, 1.3

1966-1991

In June 1966 the Wartburg 353 was introduced as the successor to the 311. In its home market Eastern Germany, it was used for all types of government transportation, including as a Volkspolizei police car. However, due to the nature of the planned economy, deliveries to private owners could take ten to fifteen years. It was powered by a 993 cc, three-cylinder two-stroke engine that took almost two decades to refine. The 353 was sold as the Wartburg Knight in several countries, in the Netherlands it was sold as the Wartburg 1000.
