The Plymouth Barracuda made its debut in April 1964, becoming the first true American pony car - two weeks before the arrival of the Ford Mustang. Based on the Plymouth Valiant, the first generation stood out with its distinctive wraparound rear window, the largest ever fitted to a production car at the time. Initially available only as a fastback coupé, later generations added hardtop and convertible body styles while evolving into increasingly performance-oriented machines. Engine options ranged from economical six-cylinders to legendary V8s, including the 426 Hemi and 440 Six-Pack in the third generation. Although the Mustang ultimately overshadowed it in sales, the Barracuda earned a lasting reputation among enthusiasts thanks to its bold styling, powerful engines and strong motorsport credentials. Production ended in 1974 following the oil crisis.
