The DAF 44 was introduced in September 1966. Styled by Giovanni Michelotti, it represented a cautious move upmarket for the company. It was fitted with a 844 cc, two-cylinder engine and the innovative continuously variable transmission system, the DAF Variomatic. In addition to the two-door saloon, a two-door estate/hatchback or panel van version were also available. Production ended in November 1974 after 167,902 had been built.

In 1974, the 44 was given a facelift and was henceforth known as the DAF 46. Apart from a few minor external changes, the most important change was the renewed Variomatic. The 46 would be the last DAF, in January 1975, the brand was taken over by Volvo. In February 1976, at the launch of the Volvo 66 (formerly the DAF 66), it was announced that the DAF 46 would be phased out.
