Capella (616, RX-2)

1970-2002

The Mazda Capella was introduced in May 1970 as an intermediate alternative to the smaller Familia and the larger Luce. It was powered by four-cylinder engines displacing either 1,490 or 1,586 cc. This generation was sold in export markets as the Mazda 616. An optional 1,146 cc Wankel engine was offered and known as the Capella Rotary in Japan or the Mazda RX-2 for export. The Capella received a thorough facelift in February 1974, including a restyled front end and a redesigned dashboard. This model received an optional 1,769 cc engine. The second-generation Capella was introduced in October 1977 and was marketed in most export markets as the Mazda 626.
