Honda

Introduced in July 1972, the Civic represented a decisive step in Honda’s evolution from a motorcycle-focused manufacturer into a serious global carmaker. It effectively replaced the smaller N-series microcars such as the N360 in export markets and became Honda’s first truly international volume seller. Compact yet intelligently packaged, the Civic featured front-wheel drive, a transverse-mounted engine and independent suspension. Its light weight and precise steering gave it a lively character that distinguished it from many economy cars of the period. Early versions were powered by a 1,169 cc four-cylinder engine producing around 55 hp, offering an appealing balance between performance and fuel economy during the oil crisis years. In 1975 Honda introduced the 1,488 cc CVCC engine, a major technological breakthrough that met stringent U.S. emissions regulations without the need for a catalytic converter. This innovation significantly enhanced Honda’s reputation worldwide and positioned the Civic as both economical and technically advanced.

For model year 1977, the Civic received a noticeable facelift. Externally, it gained larger rear light clusters, revised front indicators and thicker energy-absorbing bumpers in line with evolving safety regulations. The 1200 engine’s output increased to 60 hp, and interior refinements improved comfort and perceived quality. Production of the first generation Civic continued until 1979, by which time the car had become one of the most important compact cars of its era.
