Honda

The Honda Accord was introduced in 1976 as a larger and more refined companion to the already successful Civic. While the Civic had established Honda in the compact economy segment, the Accord moved the brand upmarket, targeting buyers who wanted more space, comfort and performance without sacrificing fuel efficiency. Initially launched as a three-door hatchback, the Accord combined clean, modern styling with front-wheel drive and a transverse-mounted four-cylinder engine. Power came from a 1,599 cc engine producing around 68 hp. Like the Civic, the Accord benefited from Honda’s CVCC technology, allowing it to meet strict emissions standards without a catalytic converter - a major competitive advantage, particularly in North America. In 1977 a four-door sedan version was added, significantly broadening its appeal. The car offered a level of equipment and refinement uncommon in its class at the time, including features such as power steering, air conditioning and high-quality interior materials.
