Giulia

1962-1978

In June 1962 the Alfa Romeo Giulia t.i. was presented at the Autodromo Nazionale Monza. The t.i. suffix had been used in the 1950s for high performance versions of the 1900 and Giulietta. For the Giulia however, at the introduction it was the only version available. It's new 1,570cc engine gave the Giulia an impressive acceleration and top speed. At first the Giulia t.i. had a front seat bench and a column mounted shifter, but in May 1964 a floor shifter became available in combination with seperate front seats. In September 1963 the Bertone styled Giulia Sprint GT was presented at the Internationale Automobil-Ausstellung in Frankfurt which remained in production until March 1966 when it was succeeded by the Giulia Sprint GT Veloce.

In May 1964 the new entry-level Giulia 1300 was introduced. Visually the 1300 was distinguished by a new grille design housing single instead of twin head lamps. In 1965 the Giulia Super was added to the range which featured a new dashboard and a new sportier steering wheel. The same year saw the introduction of the entry-level coupé GT 1300 junior with a smaller engine and a simpler dashboard compared to the other GT's.

In 1974 the Giulia was given a facelift and was from now on named Giulia Nuova. Mechanically little had changed, what stands out most are the new black plastic grille and the flat trunk lid without the characteristic centre spine. Introduced in June 1976, the Giulia Nuova Super Diesel became the first ever diesel engined Alfa Romeo passenger car.
