Alfa Romeo
Alfasud
1971-1989
Already in the 1950s Alfa Romeo had explored building a smaller front wheel drive car, but it was not until 1967 that firm plans were laid down for an all-new model to fit in below the existing range. The car was manufactured at a new factory at Pomigliano d'Arco in southern Italy, hence the car's name Alfa Sud. The Alfasud debuted at the November 1971 Salone dell'Automobile di Torino and was praised for its styling and road-holding abilities although it became notorious for its susceptibility to rust, because of the use of inferior recycled steel from Russia. Apart from the saloon, a three-door wagon (Giardinetta) was introduced in 1975 and a two-door coupé (Sprint) in 1976. In 1981 a three-door hatchback became available, a year later followed by a five-door hatchback. In 1983, the Alfasud saloons were replaced by the new Alfa Romeo 33. The Alfasud Sprint was renamed Alfa Romeo Sprint and remained in production until 1989.
