Simca

The Simca 1100 was launched in 1967 as an advanced compact family car, positioned between the 1000 and 1300. Its transverse engine and front-wheel drive, independent suspension, front disc brakes, rack-and-pinion steering and practical folding rear seat made it notably modern. Three- and five-door hatchbacks, estates and vans were offered, with engines ranging from 944 to 1,294 cc. From 1974 the 82 hp 1100 TI became an early example of the hot hatch, capable of 169 km/h. The 1100 was also the basis for the Matra Rancho, an early crossover which had a genuine offroad appearance but was built on the front-wheel drive Simca 1100 basis. Production peaked at nearly 300,000 cars in 1973. The Horizon gradually replaced the 1100 from 1978, although production continued into the 1980s. Around 2.2 million were built altogether.
