Presented in March 1956, the Renault Dauphine was developed as the successor to the hugely successful 4CV and quickly became one of Europe’s most important small family cars. Like its predecessor, it featured a rear-mounted engine and rear-wheel drive, but it offered more space, improved comfort and a modern four-door body. Powered by an 845 cc four-cylinder engine, the Dauphine combined economical running costs with lively performance for its class. Renault invested heavily in its development, carrying out more than two million kilometres of testing before production began. The Dauphine also stood out for its cheerful pastel colours and stylish interior, reflecting Renault’s new focus on design. By 1960 it had become France’s best-selling car and was already being built under licence in several countries.

For model year 1961 Renault expanded the Dauphine range with the more luxurious Ondine, featuring upgraded trim, additional equipment and a four-speed gearbox as standard. Buyers seeking more performance could opt for the Gordini, tuned by Amédée Gordini. The Dauphine remained in production until 1967, by which time more than two million units had been built, making it one of Renault’s greatest commercial successes and a landmark in post-war European motoring.
