Renault
12
1969-1980
The Renault 12 was introduced at the Paris Motor Show in October 1969 as a compact family car positioned between the Renault 8 and the Renault 16. Offered as both a saloon and, from 1970, an estate, it quickly earned praise for its spacious and comfortable interior, clean styling and low fuel consumption. That same year Renault expanded the range with the high-performance Renault 12 Gordini, powered by a 1,565 cc all-aluminium engine from the Renault 16 TS with twin Weber carburettors producing 125 hp. Featuring a five-speed gearbox, four-wheel disc brakes and uprated suspension, the Gordini could reach 185 km/h and became instantly recognisable in its bold colour schemes, most famously French Blue with white stripes. Although initially successful, production ended in 1974 after 5,188 units had been build. In October 1972 the more refined 12 TS was introduced, using a 1,289 cc engine with a twin-choke Weber carburettor, raising output to 64 hp and a top speed of 150 km/h, while gaining sportier trim details. A year later, the 12 TR was added with automatic transmission as standard. Development of the R12 had begun in 1964. Mechanically distinct from both the Renault 4 and Renault 16, the R12 mounted its engine longitudinally ahead of the front wheels rather than behind them, giving it a straightforward layout and balanced driving characteristics. Production in France continued until 1980, but the Renault 12 enjoyed a far longer international life through licensed manufacture in numerous countries. Around 2.5 million were built, confirming its status as one of Renault’s most commercially successful global models.

The whole range was facelifted in 1975 with a simplified grille, new rear lamps and dashboard. The Renault 12's successor, the Renault 18, was launched in 1978, but French production of the Renault 12 continued for two more years in spite of its successor's instant popularity.
