Peugeot

Presented at the Paris Motor Show in September 1972, the Peugeot 104 marked the brand's entry into the growing supermini segment. Designed by Paolo Martin, it combined compact dimensions with modern engineering, including the innovative all-aluminium PSA X engine mounted transversely with the gearbox beneath it. Initially, the 104 was available only as a four-door saloon, but in 1973 Peugeot introduced a shorter and sportier three-door coupé, which would later evolve into the popular Z-series models. The 104 offered impressive handling, good fuel economy and a surprisingly spacious interior for its size. Built at Peugeot's new Mulhouse factory, it became the basis for several other PSA models, including the Citroën LN and Visa. The 104 remained in production until 1988 and laid the foundations for the enormously successful Peugeot 205.

In 1976 the 104 received its most significant update. The original four-door saloon was replaced by a far more practical five-door hatchback, while subtle styling revisions included redesigned rear lights with wraparound indicators. A new 1.1-litre engine joined the range, and the sporty coupé lineup expanded with the lively 104 ZS. Further refinements followed in 1978, including updated lighting and additional model variants. The facelift proved highly successful, with 1977 becoming the Peugeot 104's best production year.
