Jaguar
XJ series
1968-2019
The Jaguar XJ Series was introduced in September 1968 as the successor to several earlier Jaguar saloons, including the 340, 420 and the large 420G. Designed under the direction of Sir William Lyons, the XJ combined elegant styling with advanced engineering and quickly became the company’s flagship model. It featured Jaguar’s well-proven independent rear suspension and was initially powered by the XK straight-six engine in 2.8- and 4.2-litre form. In 1972 the range expanded with the introduction of the XJ12, fitted with Jaguar’s new 5.3-litre V12 engine, making it one of the fastest luxury saloons of its time. The Series I established the XJ as the cornerstone of Jaguar’s saloon range.

Introduced in September 1973, the Jaguar XJ Series II was an updated version of the original XJ with a number of styling and engineering improvements. The most noticeable changes were a revised front grille, raised front bumper and updated interior with a redesigned dashboard. The range continued to offer both six-cylinder and V12 engines, maintaining the strong performance and refinement that had made the XJ successful. In 1975 Jaguar introduced the longer-wheelbase XJ12L and Daimler Double Six versions, providing additional rear passenger space and luxury. The Series II remained in production until 1979.
