Ford

Consul

1972-1975

The Consul name was revived in April 1972 as the entry-level designation for the newly introduced Ford Granada range. Developed jointly by Ford Britain and Ford of Germany, the model formed part of Ford’s increasingly integrated European strategy and was built in both Cologne and Dagenham. The Consul served as the lower-priced, lower-specification alternative to the Granada and could be distinguished by its two-panel cross-mesh grille, rather than the Granada’s horizontal chrome-bar design. Available as a two- or four-door saloon, two-door coupé and five-door estate, the range included Consul, Consul L and Consul GT versions. Unlike earlier Zephyr estates, the Consul Estate was built in-house by Ford. The revival was relatively short-lived: in late 1975 the Consul name was discontinued, after which all models in the range were marketed simply as Ford Granada.
