Austin

Cambridge

1954-1969

In September 1954 the Austin Cambridge was introduced as a replacement for the A40 Somerset. It was a four-door saloon with modern unibody construction. The Cambridge was available as A40 with a 1.2 litre engine and A50 with a 1.5 litre engine, with identical bodies. Only 30,666 A40 Cambridge models were produced, the A50 was much more succesful with a total of 114,867 cars being produced.

In January 1957 the A40 was discontinued and the A50 was replaced by the A55. The Cambridge had been restyled and now had a larger boot and much larger rear window. The A55 used the same engine as its predecessor, though with a higher compression ratio. Two-tone paint was an option.

In 1958, BMC commissioned Battista Farina to redesign its entire car line. This resulted in the creation of three "Farina" saloons, each of which was badge-engineered to fit the various BMC car lines. The mid-sized Farinas were launched in December 1958 with the Wolseley 15/60. Within months, the similar Austin A55 Cambridge Mark II was also offered. A stationcar appeared in 1960.

An upgraded Cambridge model, now called the A60, was introduced in October 1961. It included a new 1.6-litre version of the four-cylinder engine which had first been used in the MGA. Modified styling included side chrome stripes – some models with contrasting colour infills – and reduced fins on the rear wings. A diesel version was introduced in 1961 for export cars and was available in the UK from 1962.
