Glas

Introduced in September 1962, the Glas 1004 marked Hans Glas GmbH’s entry into the compact middle-class market. Built in Dingolfing, it featured a modern monocoque body, independent suspension and an advanced four-cylinder engine of 992 cc, giving the lightweight saloon lively performance. The range was expanded in 1965 with the more powerful 1204 and 1304 models, using enlarged versions of the same engine while retaining the car’s compact dimensions and practical character. Stylish coupé versions designed by Pietro Frua added further appeal and helped establish Glas as a serious competitor in the German market. In 1966, fastback estate versions known as the 1004 CL and 1304 CL were introduced, the “CL” designation standing for Combi Limousine. Although innovative, these estates offered limited luggage and rear passenger space due to the short wheelbase and sold in small numbers. Nevertheless, it inspired BMW to develop the 02-series Touring. Production of the range continued briefly after BMW acquired Glas in 1966, ending in 1968.
