Audi

50

1974-1978

In the early 1970s small hatchbacks became increasingly popular. Two years after the Renault 5 and three years after the Fiat 127, the Audi 50 was introduced, in July 1974. Just six weeks after its launch, a rebadged version was released as the Volkswagen Polo, offered with more choice of engines and other options. It took a few months before the Audi 50 appeared in export markets; in the Netherlands it was introduced in March 1975. The cheaper Volkswagen Polo outsold the Audi 50 almost immediately and consequently it was discontinued in 1978, after a total production run of 180,812 units.
